Full-scale test of ammonia two-stroke engine: What it means for the future

The development of ammonia-powered engines has taken a significant step forward with the commencement of full-scale testing of a two-stroke engine running on ammonia at MAN Energy Solutions’ Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC). This marks a major milestone in the push towards cleaner and sustainable maritime propulsion technologies.

After more than a year of single-cylinder ammonia engine testing, the team has now advanced to testing a full-scale engine. This phase focuses on refining critical aspects such as combustion efficiency, emissions reduction, engine tuning, atomizer 6 performance, and control system reliability .

Timeline:-

The testing phase is expected to continue until mid-2025, signaling a deliberate and cautious approach to the development and safety assurance of ammonia-powered engines.

Ole Pyndt Hansen, Head of Two-Stroke R&D, emphasized the significance of ensuring safety and reliability during the conversion process, which has been a core focus leading up to this stage.
